The lake's history
Why this lake.
Indian Lake is a working, lived-in lake rather than a resort — and it has been for well over a century.
The Ohio General Assembly resolved in 1850 to use it as a canal water supply. Work ran from 1851 to 1860 and cost $340,000. It was formed from roughly 640 acres of shallow natural lakes and marshes; the first bulkhead covered about 1,000 acres.

Canal-feeder use ended in 1896. On 9 April 1898 the Ohio General Assembly dedicated the lake as a recreation area. By 1893 it had reached 6,334 acres.

Orchard Island held Chautauqua Assemblies from 1910 — travelling programmes of lectures, music and instruction that were a fixture of American summers.

Sandy Beach Amusement Park opened on Decoration Day 1924. The Minnewawa dance hall, billed as the largest in Ohio, ran two bandstands and drew the Rudy Vallée and Paul Whiteman orchestras. Among the boats named from that era were the Curio, the Orchard Island Queen and the Ghost.

The Indian Lake Vintage Boat & Auto Show has run annually since 1999, organised by the Indian Lake chapter of the Antique & Classic Boat Society, held mid-July at Russells Point Harbor with boats displayed in the water and cars along West Main Street.
Indian Lake ACBS chapter; Peak of Ohio.
The newest thing being built on this lake is on Orchard Island, where the Chautauqua tents used to go up.
